Time well spent

I once heard someone say, "Valentine's Day is a holiday invented by greeting card companies." Even in China, it is simply 情人节, or "ask people day"; contrary to any other holiday, it is now completely divorced from any historical relevance or greater purpose than to give romantic gifts.

This year I tried my hand at making simple sugar cookies with hard glaze decoration.

They were so imperfect and messy but I loved them nonetheless, and I sent each to a friend. I think that gift-giving can often be shallow and frivolous, but I heard a wise friend once say that time was the greatest gift of all. In showing your concern and love through spending your own time, which is something so precious and something you can't get back, you are giving a part of yourself.

 

That is how I always justify homemade over store-bought.
