Sometimes a perfect brunch needs no words; Le Pain Quotidien's specialty is the communal table, a long slab of wood that can seat over 20 people. Eating my sweet potato soup elbow-to-elbow with an elderly woman drinking coffee and scribbling poetry accross from S, I realized that forced commensality with total strangers can be unexpectedly comforting.
Have you had Speculoos spread? It is truly the new Nutella, tasting like a combination of caramel, peanuts, and honey all in one.

Speculoos spread is delicious - I particularly like it on a freshly made, warm belgian waffle.

That sounds lovely! I'd never heard of it before this year. x
DeleteSpeculoos! :D I haven't tried it, but here in the Netherlands, "Speculaas" is a spiced cookie, usually with a windmill print on it! I like that, and as I am usually no fan of things to fabricated I still haven't tried speculoos!
ReplyDeleteI bet they taste wonderful; I wonder if it's derived from the cookie? x
DeleteSpeculoos is Dutch and based on the taste of the Speculaas cookies!
ReplyDeleteChacha, good to know! Thank you! x

Inge, I hope you do some day; you're missing out! x
DeleteI like Le Pain Quotidien! It actually is a Belgian chain and they are numerous here :)
ReplyDeleteSpeculoos spread is also popular here. But didn't you know Speculoos before? It's a cookie. But I think it's mostly known in Belgium and the Netherlands because it comes from the St Nicholas' feast only us celebrate (but I'm not sure)
(Ah, and wikipedia told me "In the United States, New Zealand and Australia, speculoos are often sold as Belgian Spice Cookies or Dutch Windmill cookies")
Morgane, I had no idea that it is a Belgian chain! Belgium is such a small country and it's hard to find things from there in America. x
Deletelovely post!
