Gallery Visit: Lin Tianmiao

Jan 20, 2013

Remember this post about Lin Tianmiao? I finally got a chance to see her retrospective exhibition at the Asia Society in New York, Bound Unbound.

Her works all refer to death in some way, but in the elegant, storytelling sense. Much like the way Snow White dies, how the forest vines grow over the body, and moths nest nearby. Here, the white satin mannequins' heads are replaced by speakers and are connected to each other by thread, an unsettling visualization of how women communicate both verbally and nonverbally.

Playing in the background were normal sounds such as city buses or conversation, remixed in a disconcerting way to match Lin's taste for the macabre and dark.
