It wasn't snowing inside the café. The flurries are actually halations: spots of light produced when my camera captured the sunlight streaming in from the opposite window. The famous Dutch painter Vermeer (most known for Girl with a Pearl Earring), who used a camera obscura to paint more accurately, actually incorporated halations into his paintings along the rim of a glass or the edge of a chair; objects do not have perfect outlines, but are fuzzy with spots of light. This tiny detail made his paintings seem more cheerful and bright.

ReplyDeleteUnfortunately I'm not a morning person so I don't have any morning traditions - mine tends to be brunch/lunch ones. Grabbing a 'schooner' or a plate of wedges with sour cream before class used to be one of ours.

I had quite forgotten that you are Dutch! Vermeer is one of my favorites, and the Netherlands definitely reached a golden age of painting during the Renaissance. x
