Elephants Never Forget

Sep 7, 2012

Yao Ming, the giant with a giant heart.
Elephants are my favorite animal. Massive, yet graceful, endearing, and passive. In art, especially in Early Italian Renaissance paintings, depictions of elephants represent chastity and virginity. In Gian Lorenzo Bernini's sculpture Pulcino della Minerva, this arbitrary animal was picked to represent the papal family's legacy and stability.

Elephant poaching is not a "trendy" issue that has been endorsed by many celebrities, and Yao Ming doesn't attempt to convince you to donate and change the world. I appreciate his quiet reverence and respect for these beasts.

    1. Nathalie, I am sure we have done worse things in order to achieve a very shallow desire: wealth. x

  5. So poignant with a powerful message sent across. I do love the beauty of these pictures though they are meant to project sadness and tug on people's compassion.

I hate poaching coz most of the times, the animals suffer a great deal while being alive. I sure sound like a hypocrite as I can't live without my meat. But poaching and killing for fur to me are entirely different issues.

    1. Eloquently, said Jo. I am similarly a meat-eater, though I'm slowly curbing how often, and I feel like a hypocrite at times too. I think it's important to realize that there are other animals who also hunt animals for meat; humans, however, are the only animal who hunt other animals for decoration and ornamentation, such as for the ivory on elephants. x

  6. This is one is so meaningful, I also like elephants and they should not doing these things to these animals. It's possible that only few elephants will be left for the next generation to see.
